During Winter, cold outdoor air and indoor heat pull much needed water from skin at the same time. A cream that felt generous in October can feel almost useless by afternoon in November. You do your usual morning ritual. But by mid-afternoon your face feels tight again, makeup clings in patches, and the lines around the mouth look a little deeper than they did in Autumn.
Here’s how to keep skin hydrated from November through mid-January — the season Traditional Chinese Medicine calls energetic Winter, the season of the Water element (November 8 through January 17).
Winter is depleting to skin in two ways at once:
Outside, cold air holds less moisture in skin than warm air. Wind and wet-cold days strip the surface of skin.
Inside, the furnace or the car heater dries the air you live in — and the skin that lives in it.
Water leaves the skin from both directions. A cream that might have kept up with Autumn dryness, even well, is rarely built for this double drought.
In the body, Water’s work is storage, rest, and deep hydration. When Water energy is out of balance, skin dehydrates, loses tone, and looks thirsty.
If you remember only three things about Winter’s aggressions, take note of these:

November 8 to January 17 is Winter in TCM’s five-element year.
Use a face cream made for cold-weather aggression: essential-oil-rich Water Day Cream, formulated according to TCM principles.
Eat warm, cooked, black and blue-black foods. We gathered a list for you in Black Foods for Winter.
Why “more of the same cream” usually fails
Most people answer tightness with a thicker layer of whatever cream they used in September. Sometimes that helps — for an hour or so. Then dry air outdoors and dry heat indoors start again.
An Autumn season cream such as Metal element Day Cream is formulated to combat that season’s dryness, mineral loss, and ashen look after the first cool front.
But Winter asks for more.
A Winter season face cream has to hold water in skin, protect skin against cold, and support tone when the face starts to look drawn and droopy.
If you are still using Metal Day Cream, it was the right companion through October 20. But from November to mid-January, Water Day Cream is the match.
You’re not abandoning a product that “stopped working.” You’re simply and logically changing with the seasons, the way you change the clothing you wear.
A word about Winter 2026–2027
The Pacific region is in a potent El Niño. Forecasts for winter 2026–27 point to a very strong event. That doesn’t paint the same Winter on every state.
In many El Niño years the South and parts of the West run wetter and stormier. California often sees more Pacific moisture. The northern Plains and parts of the Ohio Valley can lean milder or a little drier than a typical La Niña Winter. The East is split: some regions stay raw and damp; others get a brief thaw, then return to hot, drying furnace air. None of that is an outright promise for your region. El Niño tilts the odds but it doesn’t write the forecast. What it does mean for skin is mixed weather:
rain and muggy cold one week
a heated house the next
a sudden dry wind after a cold front.
TCM still says the season has an energetic effect on the face, whether or not snow falls.
The simplest way to keep skin in balance through that mixed weather is by using at least one PHYTO5 Water element skincare product — Day Cream — between November 8 and January 17 — even if your town never sees a solitary snowflake.
The cream for this Winter season
Water Day Cream is the fundamental Winter face cream for cold outside, dry heat inside, and skin that craves tone and firmness as well as water — including in the warmer South.
It’s made with extracts of ginkgo and buckwheat, avocado and sunflower oils, and a synergistic blend of essential oils: juniper berry, rosemary, and sage. Use a very small amount in the morning (or at night) on a cleansed, toned face, neck, and décolleté. Less is more with PHYTO5. For a richer night step, PHYTO5 also makes Water Night Cream.

Short Winter FAQs
-
On approximately November 8. Metal season ends October 20. Earth’s 18-day between seasons periods runs October 21–November 7. Water / Winter is November 8 through January 17.
-
Yes, if you are following the TCM calendar. Cold is the seasonal aggression of Water even when the forecast is mild. Indoor heat, wind, and that drawn Winter look still show up.
-
Not really. A thicker layer may comfort skin for a short time. But it won’t protect against Winter cold or support tone the way a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) formulated Water cream such as PHYTO5’s will.
-
A very small amount — a dime sized dollop to face. Apply to cleansed, toned face, neck, and décolleté. Less is more with PHYTO5.
-
Yes, if you prefer to keep it light. For a richer night step, PHYTO5 also makes Water Night Cream.
-
The entire body responds differently to changes of season. Over many centuries of observations, TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) has found that foods and food prep methods that work in Spring do not uplift the body during Winter.
During TCM Winter, eat warm, cooked black and blue-black foods: black beans, dark berries, sesame, seaweed, soups and stews. For more on this, check out our full article: Black Foods for Winter.

No. El Niño can change rain, wind, and indoor heating patterns week to week. The TCM season still calls for Water skincare from November 8 to January 17. It’s not just about the weather in TCM. It’s also about the underlying cyclic energy which skin responds to.
-
The Water line is especially useful for mature, dehydrated, or sun-damaged skin that needs tone and elasticity. Relatively well-balanced skin can use it as the seasonal Winter moisturizer.

PHYTO5 products with potent essential oils are not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
