The Fall Equinox this year is Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 8:05 p.m. EDT. That is the moment the sun crosses the equator heading south. Day and night come into near-equal balance. Then daylight begins its long decline toward the Winter Solstice.
Fall’s weather effect on skin is dryness. If you take one product into Equinox week, make it Metal Day Cream — the morning cream made to mineralize, oxygenate, and protect against Fall’s dry air. Details below.
In traditional Chinese medicine this turning point sits inside energetic Fall and the Metal element: August 7 to October 20. The felt weather and the official calendar often disagree — late heat can linger — but the light has already changed. Skin, lungs, and mood usually follow the light.
If you only remember three things from this page:
Equinox energy is balance, then inward.
Metal’s seasonal aggression on skin is dryness — tightness, dullness, surface flakes, fine lines that look suddenly deeper.
The simplest daily way to meet that dryness is Metal Day Cream in the morning on cleansed, toned skin.

What the Equinox actually does
As the sun passes south across the equator we receive roughly equal light and dark. Energies draw inward. TCM calls this rising yin.
The Spring Equinox expressed yang outwardly: sprouts, green, motion. The Fall Equinox is the opposite hinge. Harvest ripens and then begins to wither — and that withering is beautiful. You can live with these energies instead of against them.
Full moons often fall near the equinoxes. For the ancient Chinese, the autumn equinox moon marked the beginning of the dark, yin half of the year.
“Our internal and external energy is noticeably winding down this time of year, moving out of the total yang of Summer and late Summer but not yet descending into the total yin of Winter. As such we call this season ‘yang within yin’… Most people love this final burst as it reveals itself through the leaves changing color.”
Depending on how close to the equator you live, you may see a little more or a little less than twelve hours of daylight. After September 22, daylight dwindles until the Winter Solstice, the shortest day and the doorway into Water / Winter.
The date moves slightly. The Fall Equinox falls on September 21, 22, or 23 depending on the year. In 2026 it is the 22nd in every U.S. time zone.
Two harvests, two kinds of abundance
Both equinoxes arrive with a feast of seasonal food. Plants respond to the shift in light. That shift peaks on the equinox itself.
The vernal feast is young and green: bitter shoots, eggs, fresh milk. Autumn’s feast is ripe and on the edge of ending — pumpkins and squashes, grain, grapes, late orchard fruit. Waverly Fitzgerald called it produce “on the edge of dying,” which is exactly Metal’s lesson: gather what is essential, release the rest.
That is also why white foods belong to this season in TCM. White is Metal’s color. Pears, white fungus, lily bulb, daikon, almonds, rice, and tofu moisten Lung yin and help the body meet dryness. Pair them with the more warming fall foods as nights cool. See our best eating practices for Fall.
Why Autumn is a cleansing season
For most people the Equinox is the official start of autumn. In TCM it is an important time to cleanse, then fortify.
Metal’s organs are lung (yin) and large intestine (yang). They need to be clear and strong before Winter. Skin, in this system, is bound to the lung — TCM even speaks of skin as a kind of third lung. When autumn air dries the lungs and the large intestine, the face often tells on you first: tightness after washing, flakes around the nose and brows, makeup that clings, fine lines that look etched overnight.
First cleanse. Then nourish. Then protect against dryness every morning.

You do not need a new ten-step routine. You need one cream that was actually formulated for this season’s weather.
Crème Cérésal Métal — Metal Day Cream is the Metal line’s daytime moisturizer. PHYTO5 calls it your most fundamental Fall moisturizer for a reason. It is made to oxygenate and mineralize skin while it guards against Metal’s seasonal aggression: dryness. It also helps plump the look of fine lines, ease congestion and puffiness, and bring brightness back to dull, flaky skin.
Use it if your skin is relatively balanced and you simply want to live with the season — or if Fall has already made you look a little ashen.
How to use it on Equinox week (and through October 20):
After cleanser and Metal toner, warm a very small amount between your fingers. Press it into face, neck, and décolleté in the morning. That is the whole gesture. The cream does the seasonal work: rice bran oil and rice extract for softness, rosemary extract, sunflower oil, and the Metal essential oil pairing of ylang ylang and eucalyptus.
Ylang ylang is not decoration here. Its sweet, calming quality supports the nervous system while the season asks you to come inward. That is the Equinox on the skin: less outward fire, more minerals, oxygen, and quiet moisture.
If you want the full Metal ritual, the Metal line is built as a set. The Day Cream is the one piece to start with if you only add one product for this turning point.
Notice the light your body already has
All of nature answers the Equinox, not only the trees. You answer it too, whether you mark the date or not. The message is simple: slow down, gather your energy, go within.
The sun enters Libra, the sign of balance, at this same threshold. That is why the Equinox is the cleanest day of the year to ask:
Do I have balance in body, mind, and spirit?
Where am I still living in midsummer mode — too much heat, too much output, too little rest?
What can I release so Winter does not find me depleted?
Spring turned the ignition key. Fall begins to pull that activity inward. Days shorten. Darkness increases. Metal energy favors refinement over accumulation. Earth is offering her last display of bounty and then going into incubation. You can mirror that without becoming grim: celebrate the harvest, then let the extra drop away.
Practices that make the Equinox tangible
Known as Mabon, Harvest Home, Feast of Avalon, Cornucopia, Festival of the Vine — the Equinox has a mystique in many traditions. Use the days just before and after September 22. You do not need all of these. One or two, done with attention, is enough.
Gather with friends around a small fire as summer’s outward yang closes.
Sit in a place that still feels beautiful as the light thins. Meditate, or speak one honest intention for the darker half of the year.
Make a simple altar of Earth’s remaining bounty — apples, grain, a white cloth, one candle.
Bake bread. Make sandwiches with grilled harvest vegetables.
Cook a stew from what is actually in season. Serve it without rush.
Bring apple, wreath, candle, or sheaves of grain into the room you live in. Light the candle after dusk and notice the balance of light and dark in the room itself.
Set out nuts and seeds for birds already living by this calendar.
Give thanks. Not as a performance — as a clearing. Gratitude is Metal work: keep what is essential.
The next morning, use Metal Day Cream as the smallest possible ritual. Same time, same gesture, through October 20. Skin is how the season lands on you first.
A Short Equinox FAQ
-
Tuesday, September 22, at 8:05 p.m. Eastern (5:05 p.m. Pacific). It is September 23 in UTC.
-
No. The Equinox is one astronomical instant. PHYTO5’s Metal / Fall season runs August 7 to October 20. The Equinox falls in the heart of that season.
-
Drier air, wind, and the first indoor heat strip moisture. In TCM that is Metal dryness showing on the “third lung” — the skin. Mineralize and protect in the morning rather than waiting for Winter.
-
White, moistening foods for the lungs, plus warming cooked meals as nights cool. Start with our white foods for Fall.
-
If you can only use one product, then it’s Metal Day Cream — oxygenate, mineralize, and protect against Fall dryness. It’s unisex too.
