“Self-care is a term that is thrown around a lot these days, but what does it really mean?… True self-care is a deep loving understanding of yourself. It means that you take care of yourself so you are at your healthiest and happiest… Self-care is about creating balance in your life, not about being selfish or always giving to others. It is about building in time to nourish your mind, body, and soul.” –Liza Laird, Live Light: Self-Care 101
Many of us spend a great deal of our lives taking care of others. Caregivers and parents (especially single parents) can get caught up in the cycle of giving, giving, giving, and understandably so. The dilemma arises when we give, give, give at the expense of ourselves.
Take the analogy of the flight attendant’s oxygen mask instructions. The attendant will emphasize that if you are traveling with a child or someone who is dependent on you, it is vital that you place the mask on yourself first and then on your charge. You can be of no use to your child in a flight emergency if your child can breathe and you can’t.
If we think about it, this analogy should apply to all of life. We can’t assist others if we ourselves are not well taken care of, strong, vibrant and happy.
We can become energy depleted by living out of balance in various arenas of our lives (work, home, spiritual, leisure, etc.) and with nature: We’re all about work but take no time for leisure or we’re consumed with our family’s issues to the exclusion of relying on a spiritual foundation.
This depletion of energy caused by an out-of-balance life can take all forms: fatigue, lethargy, depression, nervousness, anxiety, anger, resentment, physical illness, and aches and pains. It is difficult to give our best if we subject ourselves to these additional mental, emotional and physical challenges on top of the ones we already have simply in taking care of the ones we must!
Many very accomplished people have discovered the importance of self-care and balance. It wasn’t until Arianna Huffington, founder of the Huffington Post, collapsed in the middle of a work day that she realized she was barely taking care of or honoring herself. Her book, The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at a Time, is her response to that pivotal eye-opening time in her life.
Tibetan monks who seem to live lives immersed in spirituality actually take very conscious measures to ensure a healthy balance. They counter the spiritual with manual labor and challenging physical exercise.
The PHYTO5 skincare system is about far more than skincare. It’s about living a lifestyle that is in balance with the revolving systems of the year (the traditional Chinese medicine [TCM] theory of the five phases and elements).
